Arriving at school .... The school bell rings at 8:45 a.m. Students should line up on the playground and wait for me there unless it's a very cold day, in which case I pick them up at the gym. Students then hang their backpack and coat up and follow their “morning routine
Student Dismissal……To ensure your child safely gets to the correct location at the end of the day Ms. Dire and I delegated each of us to different dismissals. Students who ride bus, go to kaleidoscope/enrichment stay in my room at the end of the day. I escort the kids to the bus and cafeteria. If students are getting picked up they go to Ms. Dire’s class and she escorts students to the West Patio. Please email me if there is a change of plans, I would appreciate it if you could email before 12:15 as I will have time to check my email, if it is after 12:15 please call the office and leave a message.
Behavior system ... Students are encouraged to make good choices and are rewarded for them. I utilize the “sunny, cloudy, stormy” class behavior system. Each child's clip starts out on "sunny" each day, which stands for excellent behavior. We recite our “Following Polaris Promise” every morning. If I see a student not following their star I give them a verbal warning. Should a child need a second reminder to stay on task or follow their Polaris Star, he or she moves their clip to "stormy". As a result, the student misses recess or free time. The student is given multiple chances to move up to sunny when they are on cloudy. If the behavior still persists (which I told the students I hope I NEVER have this situation) the student will call their parent and explain why they are on cloudy, or on rare occasions a trip to the office. Most consequences are in the form of a "fine" they must pay from their classroom bank.
Friday Store and Our Classroom Economy ... Children earn play money for good behavior, staying on sunny and academic effort. They are "paid" 25 cents daily for keeping their clips on blue and turning in homework. Once a week, they can purchase toys and other items at the Store. Our store can always use new and gently used donations and helpful parent volunteers who like to play cashier (Fridays 12:45-1:15).
